MBAs are good businessmen – can handle pressure well, use money
wisely and make critical decisions in short spans of time. All these are
easier said than done. What do all this have to do with sports? When
the sun sets on Sunday evening (Dec 21), the teams of all five NMSL
franchises will be tested on all these skills and much more when the
auction for this season of NM Soccer League begins. It’s not going to be
easy.
“Sports is serious business”
The fact that Mr.Tanuj Baru is expected to co-host the auction adds much weight for the Super Sunday here at NMIMS. All teams have a virtual fund of $1,000,000,000 each, to play with.
This is how things stand at the moment for the five teams.
NM Gangstars
The defending champions have retained Rohan and Nikhil, meaning that they will have limited funds to manoeuvre around. They do have an experienced owner in Pallavi, who has a good knowledge of the players. With a lot of expectations around this team, the Gangstars think tank will have a lot of strategic work to do before the auctions.
In Shooterz’s star player Gagandeep’s words, Gangstars are ‘The team to beat’ this season!
Funds remaining: $575,000,000
NM Rebellion Royals
A team that is well set to grab the biggies this year. Royals have retained only one player –Nalin. This leaves them with a larger sum of money compared to Gangstars, Krusherz and Shooterzz. With two joker cards left, Royals have much to cheer about as far as their resources are concerned. How they maintain a fair balance in their team during the auctions will be something to look forward to. They will have to score more goals than they did last year to make an impact this time around.
Funds remaining: 775,000,000
NM Krusherz
On expected lines, Krusherz have retained Archisman and Neel.
Easily one of the well-positioned teams this season, along with Gangstars. Considering the last place finish last year, Krusherz would be looking to erase those memories. Much of their strategy would revolve around the things they did well and those things they didn’t do so well in the last season. Top of it all, they need to get a win and break their winless streak – they haven’t won a game since NMSL 1.0 finals.
Funds remaining: $575,000,000
NM Shooterz
The only team to retain a star defender (the rock solid Ishan Jha), is Shooterz. They have also retained Gagandeep Singh.
With a good mix of attack and defence (symbolically shown in photos!), Shooterz promises a lot this season. If they could maintain this balance in the auctions as well, who knows, they could end up with the best team on Sunday night, at least on paper… Still, it’s good to have the better team to start with!
Funds remaining: $575,000,000
NM Dream Kickers
Amaan Elahi has been retained. One of the two teams with huge chunk of money in the bank. Surely, Dream Kickers and Rebellion Royals (among others) would be following the exhibition match on Sunday. These two teams also have two joker cards to be used (the other three teams have just one joker card remaining). Runner up last year, the other teams will be quite watchful of this team. Their renewed team logo has a dragon sort of thing in it. Will an all out attack be the team’s approach this year? We can get a hint in the auctions tomorrow!
Funds remaining: $775,000,000
The exhibition match
This is yet another event to look forward to on Sunday, the 21st. For first years and those who would be under the scanner for the first time, this is something very important. All owners will be keenly watching for prospective defenders, goalkeepers, midfielders and forwards to be picked from this match – it is this very fact that makes this match get all the attention it requires.
Arcadia, Samarthya, NITIE and XLRI are the four sports festivals that happened prior to this. XLRI had very few juniors, Samarthya as well. Arcadia has pretty much been the only platform to see the first years in action. With not much ‘historic’ data to choose from, the owners would be relying heavily on this match, apart from the filled Powerpoint profiles that were received as part of the application process.
“This match may not have live Cameras but there will be many eyes watching like hawks”
The exhibition match starts around 7 AM at Jamnabhai Narsee grounds.
Auction begins at 4:30 PM.
Don’t miss anything. Bunk those classes if required. Make the most of your last Sunday of 2014 in NMIMS!
Welcome back, Mister Tanuj Baru!
