“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”
This classic line is always true, more
so at NMIMS. Balancing academics and extra-curriculars is a herculean
task in MBA life. Given that we have classes at all odd hours here, it
was always going to be tough.
Arcadia 2014 began with a bang on Tuesday, the 7th
of October. All of the indoor sports – Badminton, Carrom, Chess,
Counter Strike, Squash and Table Tennis. Scheduling the events required
meticulous planning and you got to say the Sports Committee did a
fantastic job. The timetables of every class, both I and II years, had
to be checked each time a fixture was put. The first years had more than
just academics to handle, which meant lesser players being available
for the event. Hopefully some day, sports gets due recognition in this
campus; only then we can match the allure of events like Valhalla et al.
Day One was mostly for the pre-quarter
finals, played before the divisions enter the round of 8. Few teams get
to the quarter finals directly in all sports by virtue of their
performance in the last year’s edition of Arcadia. Time for some action
now!
Badminton and Table Tennis began in the
afternoon around 3 PM, while a few teams practised Squash. Table Tennis
started with much fanfare. The crazy schedules meant that some people
who play other sports were involved in Table Tennis, which made the
matches all the more exciting to watch. In a gruelling battle which
lasted more than one hour, CM beat Pharma. The HR folk found the going
tough against division A, though they pulled even 2-2 to get the fifth
match on. In the ensuing battle, division A emerged victorious. A few
Badminton games were scheduled for the night owing to infrastructure
constraints.
Carrom and Chess began around 6 PM IST.
Well before the games started, there was a lot of noise and practice
where Carrom was going to be held. The enthusiasm was in the air. CM,
Pharma, HR, D and E divisions arrived in 602 to begin their game of
coins. Chess began slowly afterwards. Again, there was some overlap in
the teams. Sports require a lot of passion!
“You can never separate FIFA enthusiasts from the thick of things”
There were a few gentlemen who were in
their own world – switching off lights, turning on the projector,
computers, joysticks… Well, they did have fun. And audience too! All
this happened quite near to the more silent Carrom and Chess events.
Counter Strike participants were getting impatient in the meanwhile…
Slowly the Carrom games ended, followed
by the Chess ones, both being lucky for the HR participants. In the
Squash quarterfinal of the evening, division B blanked FMB 2-0. The
Counter Strike action began in the old building. Possibly the FMB guys
had spent a lot of time on this game before – they defeated Pharma in
the pre-quarterfinal and division E in the quarters that followed. They
will eagerly look forward to their possible opponent-in-waiting on
October 8.
Overall, it was a glorious sun-setting
day of action on day one in Arcadia 2014. Well begun is half done! Stay
tuned for more updates. Crucial games coming up on day two.
